Williamsburg AARP Tax-Aide has regretfully suspended its operations for the year and will not reopen as a result of the coronavirus.  All appointments are cancelled. Here is some information about filing your taxes that may be helpful:

  • All IRS forms, instructions and publications can be found on the IRS website
  • If you need to file after July 15, you can request an extension from the IRS website
  • You can get online help with your taxes from AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Online Tax Assistance
  • You can get  free help with your taxes on USA.gov
  • Military personnel and their families can get help from the Armed Forces Tax Council or MilTax
  • Use Free File on the IRS website to file your taxes with no software or accountant fees (for those who made $66,000 or less)
  • MyFreeTaxes.com is a partnership between H&R Block and the United Way to help you complete and file simple tax returns
  • Taxpayers can defer federal income tax payments due on April 15, 2020, to July 15, 2020, without penalties and interest, regardless of the amount owed. This deferment applies to all taxpayers, including individuals, trusts and estates, corporations and other non-corporate tax filers as well as those who pay self-employment tax.
  • Taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms or call the IRS to qualify for this automatic federal tax filing and payment relief. Individual taxpayers who need additional time to file beyond the July 15 deadline, can request a filing extension by filing Form 4868 through their tax professional, tax software or using the Free File link on IRS.gov. Businesses who need additional time must file Form 7004.

About the AARP Program

Tax-Aide is sponsored by the AARP Foundation. Expenses are paid by the Internal Revenue Service, augmented by Foundation funds. The program helps seniors and low and moderate income taxpayers of all ages. Service is on a first come, first served basis, but those over 59 years of age are given a limited priority.

Counselors are volunteers who are certified annually after passing a comprehensive IRS test. They accept no gifts or gratuities for their services. They are prepared to complete all common forms and schedules for individual tax returns. Business forms will normally be limited to Schedules C-EZ, D and SE. Clients who are delinquent in the filing of returns for past years will be assisted only if they have all the required background materials available and can be helped without inconvenience to others.

Appointments may be scheduled for the Williamsburg Library by calling 259-4072. Appointments may be scheduled for the James City County Library by calling 207-0493. Calls will be taken beginning February 1.  Appointments will be scheduled starting February 15.

Taxpayers requiring preparation of previous year returns (2016, 2017, and 2018) or amendments will be asked to make appointments for later in the tax season. Priority is given to 2019 returns.
